TENNIS : Live text - US Open 2009

What is new in US open 2009

1904: A touch of class from Marin Cilic, who completes an impressive comeback from a 2-0 deficit by bagelling Jesse Levine in the fifth set for a 4-6 2-6 6-0 6-3 6-0 victory. The Croatian will face the winner of the match between Nicolas Lapentti and Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin, currently taking place on court four, in the third round. Another impressive fightback, this time from Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez, who leads Serena Williams 3-1 in the second set. Lots of grunting and fist-pumping in this tasty encounter.
N, Wilmslow, text 81111: "If I take the rankings thing to its natural conclusion then football matches against lower ranked teams should get less points than wins over 'the big four' which is rubbish. There are leagues (Safina is winning that) and there are cups (which she isn't). You win the league by being consistent. You win cups by focussing on a single event."
1847: Sensational play from Sanchez Martinez, who swivels blindly to pump a double-handed forehand cross court past the stranded Serena Williams - definitely a contender for shot of the day. But it's not enough to prevent the defending champion from taking the first set 6-3. If all goes to Serena's plan, then Andy Murray is likely to be out on court around 1920ish.

1843: Bye bye Viktor Troicki. The 30th seed is bagelled in the decisive fourth set as Julien Benneteau records a comfortable 6-1 3-6 6-1 6-0 win. Fightbacks ahoy from struggling seeds Juan Carlos Ferrero and Marin Cilic, who both take their second-round matches into the fifth set after trailing their respective opponents 2-0.
1830: Serena is all over Martinez Sanchez right now, roaring into a 4-1 first-set lead with a combination of sheer unadulterated power and subtlety. Juan Martin del Potro seals the first set tie-break against Austrian Jurgen Melzer, but 30th seed Viktor Troicki is in serious danger of the exit door. The Serb, who trails 2-1, is 4-0 down in the fourth set against Julien Benneteau.
ArmchairEmma on 606: "I've got a horrible sinking feeling that, now that Murray has a good looking path to the quarters, he's going out in this round. Probably just a Henman hangover - but not as confident as I should be..."
1821: Tie-break time over on Louis Armstrong as Juan Martin del Potro and Jurgen Melzer smash, crash and bash for ascendency in the first set. Meanwhile on court 11, Croatian 16th seed Marin Cilic has bagelled Jesse Levine in the third set to trail 2-1 overall. Still life left in this match...
1815: Time for defending women's champion Serena Williams to grace the Arthur Ashe Stadium. Spaniard Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez - possibly the longest name on the women's tour? - stands in the way of an intriguing third-round encounter against Daniela Hantuchova. Interestingly, there was a bit of beef between the two players at this year's French Open when Williams accused Sanchez of cheating during her 4-6 6-3 6-4 win. Serena claimed a shot ricocheted off Sanchez's arms on its way over the net, but the Spaniard said she did not touch it. And to make matters worse, the point sealed the first set for Sanchez. Ooooh, testy. Anyway, Serena's out in an all-purple number, an outfit which wins the approval of the man sitting to my right.
Adam, London, text 81111: "Looking at updates on US Open site, apparently, almost 3 sets in, and neither Benneteau nor Troicki have hit a single winner between them! Only three unforced errors as well. They're obviously playing their match in Dullsville, USA!"
1800: A stirring fight-back on the horizon from the trailing seeds? Both Juan Carlos Ferrero and Marin Cilic have taken the third sets to trail 2-1 in their respective matches. Serbia's 30th seed Viktor Troicki, who is 1-1 against France's Julien Benneteau, is 4-1 down in the third set.
1756: Jo-Wilfried Tsonga pummels another ferocious forehand winner and Jarkko Nieminen looks like a man forlornly waving a five-pound note as the ice cream van screech off in the distance. Sure enough, the Frenchman nails the match with yet another confident point and judging by this performance, not too many people will want to come up against the Great Wall of Tsonga.
twinklebathat on 606: "A little off topic, but why does Safina think being number one is more memorable or more of an achievement than winning a grand slam? What is she basing that on? It's clearly far more prestigious to have one a slam, and a far more memorable statistic. Poor deluded girl. Well, wealthy, talented, deluded girl. "
1748: Easy pickings for Daniela Hantuchova, who completes a regulation 6-2 6-2 win over Vania King, who must until next year to reach her first ever grand slam third round match. The Slovakian will face either defending champion Serena Williams or Spain's Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez, who are due to play in about 12 minutes, in the next round. Elsewhere Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is one game away from a third-round passage.
AlphaDraconis99 on 606: "Looks like Cilic is on his way out as well. Murray's draw is getting easier by the day - Karlovic, Warwinka and now Cilic."
1731: Ouch, dodgy start from giant number six seed Juan Martin del Potro, who drops his very first service game to Jurgen Melzer over on Louis Armstrong. His fellow Juan - Carlos Ferrero - now trails Philipp Petzschner 2-0, the same score that Marin Cilic is down against Jesse Levine. The axe is being sharpened...
Heidi, text 81111: "Looking forward to Rafa later. Did anyone else note how on 5 live last night Chang was still referring to him and Fed as the best players with Muzza still very much the challenger!"
1723: It's all going a bit Sean Long for Marin Cilic. The 14th seed loses the first set 6-4 against unheralded American Jesse Levine, who has broken the Croatian in the second set to take a 5-2 second-set lead. I sniff some giant-killing antics in the distance... Better news for Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who takes a 2-0 lead against Jarkko Nieminen.
1712: So what do we know about Paul Capdeville? The world number 87 used to practise with Murray at the Sanchez-Casal academy in Barcelona, so hopefully no ghastly surprises in store for the Brit. He's the same height as Murray (6ft 3ins) and once shoved Mario Ancic at the French Open.
Tgsgirl on 606: "How about a word for the Battle of the Belgians? At stake between Clijsters and Flipkens: a fourth-round match, most likely against Venus Williams; $175,000; 280 WTA points and - most importantly - a keg. After the US Open, in the town of the winner and to be paid by the winner."
1706: A routine victory from what could have been a tricky second-round match for 10th seed Flavia Pennetta, who cleans up Canada's Aleksandra Wozniak 6-1 6-1. Not so good for two men's seeds right now - both Juan Carlos Ferrero (24th) and Serbia's Viktor Troicki have lost their respective first sets 6-1. Troicki has been outplayed by Julien Benneteau, who could set up an all-French third-round encounter against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
1655: So how has Andy Murray been preparing for his second round match against his unheralded Chilean opponent? Um, fiddling with his Fantasy Football team. "I've just transferred in Nicolas Anelka," Murray told Radio 5 live on Thursday, which is more than Chelsea can do right now. Murray also unveils the term "Rossing" - to copy or to cheat other players' teams to gain an advantage, a thinly veiled jibe at close friend Ross Hutchings' underhand team tactics. And just for no4chelseafan on 606, it's time to unleash the Brits on the up graphic.
5 live's tennis team tweeting from Flushing Meadows: "Tennis beauty parade in Raffles Cafe this morning... Davydenko and Stepanek enjoying some waffles..."
1648: Tsonga makes the decisive break on Nieminen's serve to take the first set 7-5 on the Grandstand. Women's 22nd seed Daniela Hantuchova is a break up against Vania King, hope to reach the third round of a grand slam for the first time in career. She'll need to up her game a notch if she wants to overcome the lithe Slovakian favourite.
G, London, text 81111: "Flavia is making us happy, even making us forget about Berlusconi and the credit crunch... We are proud of her, she is the first Italian to reach the top 10 - go Flavia!"
1633: Potential Upset O'Clock over on court 13 as 24th seed and arch Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero finds himself 4-1 down against Germany's Philipp Petzschner, while Flavia Pennetta confidently takes the first set 6-1 against Aleksandra Wozniak.
2o-DeMoN-o9 on 606: "Andy Murray. At least we have someone to turn to now the Scotland football team is doomed!"
1622: Another glorious late summer's day in New York as Flavia Pennetta makes an early break to lead Aleksandra Wozniak 4-1 on Louis Armstrong. This is very much a two-way service, so let's have your news and views via the 606 website, or via text 81111. And you can follow the BBC Radio 5 live team at Flushing Meadow on Twitter.
1615: Jarkko Nieminen drills a vicious double-handed backhand down the line as Tsonga's second serve kicks up off the hard surface, but the big-haired Frenchman holds on to his serve to take a 2-1 lead in the match, which has featured eight outright winners already.
1609: Everyone's favourite Scot (sorry Midge Ure fans) Andy Murray is back in action today after pasting Latvia's Ernests Gulbis 7-5 6-3 7-5 on Wednesday. The world number two takes on Chile's Paul Capdeville at about 1930ish at the Arthur Ashe stadium once defending women's champion Serena Williams and Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez finish their match, scheduled to start about 1800. In the meantime, Slovakia's 22nd seed Daniela Hantuchova takes on home player Vania King while 10th seed Flavia Pennetta faces a tricky second-round tie against Aleksandra Wozniak, the Canadian who impressed at the AEGON International in Eastbourne in June. In the world of men, seventh seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga plays Finland's Jarkko Nieminen on the Louis Armstrong Stadium.
1604: Afternoon team tennis, so after a bad day for the top women's seeds on Thursday, with the demise of Elena Dementieva and Jelena Jankovic, will Friday be equally as brutal to the world's best in Queens? I have absolutely no idea, nor will I be drawn on predicting any results as they'll only come back and slap me around the face like a wet halibut.
