Match report: Salah scores as Reds held by Chelsea

Image
Liverpool were held to a hard-fought 1-1 draw by Chelsea in an eventful Premier League contest at Anfield. Kai Havertz’s header put the visitors ahead in the 21st minute, but Mohamed Salah equalised in first-half stoppage time with a calmly dispatched penalty. The spot-kick had been awarded following a VAR review that resulted in Reece James being sent off for handling on the line amid a goalmouth scramble in the aftermath of a Reds corner.  Jürgen Klopp’s team subsequently spent the majority of the second period in complete control, though Chelsea stood firm to claim a point.  Team news Andy Robertson returned to Liverpool’s starting line-up as one of three changes. Fabinho and Roberto Firmino were also restored to the XI, with Kostas Tsimikas, Naby Keita and Diogo Jota named on the bench. First half Sadio Mane’s sliding tackle on James within seconds of kick-off set the tone for a frenetic opening that was played out amid an electric atmosphere. A low drive from distance...

Liverpool team vs Chelsea predicted as Diogo Jota and Andy Robertson decisions made

Image
Liverpool vs Chelsea. Jürgen Klopp vs Thomas Tuchel. Virgil van Dijk vs Romelu Lukaku. Trent Alexander-Arnold vs Reece James. There are plenty of big battles that will ultimately determine where the points are heading after tonight's clash at Anfield. A draw would not be a bad result for either side, but a victory for Liverpool would be huge in establishing a lead over their title rivals — a win would place them at least three points ahead of both Man City and Chelsea. Clearly, it is very early on in the campaign, and the September international break is yet to be upon us, but every point will be vital in this title battle, where it could be a three or even four-way fight until the end. Thiago Alcântara and Jordan Henderson are both available, as is Fabinho. Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota are fighting it out to be the number nine, and Andy Robertson is hopefully of replacing the impressive Kostas Tsimikas at left-back. Here, our writers give their take on who they think should ...

ANOTHER LOSS Jurgen Klopp not worried by Liverpool slump as Reds beaten by Chelsea in FA Cup to end treble dream

Image
Jurgen Klopp is ‘disappointed’ Liverpool are out of the FA Cup, but could not begrudge the effort on display from his players against Chelsea and is not overly concerned by their recent slump. Goals from Willian and Ross Barkley earned the  Blues a 2-0  win in the fifth round clash and condemned the Reds to a third defeat in four matches. Jurgen Klopp was disappointed with Liverpool’s FA Cup exit Only two weeks ago runaway Premier League leaders Liverpool had lost just twice in 41 matches in all competitions this season. Fast forward 14 days and Jurgen Klopp’s Reds have surrendered their rampant form, with defeat at Atletico Madrid,  a 3 -0 humbling at Watford  and now this hefty blow in west London. Liverpool still boast a 22-point Premier League lead over second-placed Manchester City, with a first top-flight title in 30 years no doubt a mere formality. However, the chance complete an historic treble is now out of reach for the Germa...

Jürgen Klopp's reaction:Chelsea 2-0 Liverpool

Image
Jürgen Klopp   acknowledged Liverpool must make improvements defensively if they're to return to top form after they were beaten 2-0 by Chelsea in the FA Cup on Tuesday night. The Reds bowed out at the fifth-round stage after goals from Willian and Ross Barkley secured victory for the hosts at Stamford Bridge. Willian opened the scoring in the 13th minute of the tie before Barkley's second-half run and finish confirmed the Blues' spot in the quarter-finals of the competition. Read on for a summary of Klopp's post-match press conference... On his thoughts on the game… Losing 2-0 is not cool, but in this case it is relatively easy to explain – we made two massive mistakes around the goals. Adrian made a super save a second or two seconds before and then this ball, a really good shot from Willian and he could not make that save. But before that we lost the ball and that's a problem. It was not the biggest shock because it is football. I...

Liverpool have brand new challenger ahead of summer's biggest transfer punch-up

Could Chelsea make any Jadon Sancho interest harder for Liverpool? Jadon Sancho is a man in demand  (Image: Boris Streubel/Getty Images) For those of a certain age, and of a certain inclination for video games, and of a certain abstract mindset, the transfer window can often resemble a game of Street Fighter. Or, for the more gore-obsessed teenager, Mortal Kombat. There is a goal at the end of the game, the cut-scene at the end of the journey, and it is the player a club wants to sign. Obstacle by obstacle, fighter by fighter, the journey progresses; interest registered, discussions held, options weighed up. But just as the final boss comes into view, just before M Bison and Shang Tsung stand in the way of completion, in comes an unexpected problem. Enter Player Two. Liverpool, right now, could be considered Player One in the race for Jadon Sancho. Jurgen Klop p  has refused to be drawn on rumours of the club's interest but, perhaps more telling...

US billionaire Todd Boehly primed to raise stakes in bid to buy Chelsea, despite club insisting Roman Abramovich will not sell

Image
Ref:dailytelegraph.co.uk American billionaire Todd Boehly will submit a second bid for Chelsea, despite the club's insistence that they are not for sale   CREDIT:  GETTY IMAGES The American billionaire who wants to buy Chelsea is considering making a fresh approach, despite the club’s insistence that owner Roman Abramovich will not consider a sale. Todd Boehly, who is part-owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, is keen to purchase a Premier League club and has made Chelsea his No 1 target. Senior Chelsea sources are adamant that the club is not for sale and that Abramovich is not interested in entering into any negotiations, in spite of reports that his valuation of Chelsea has now rocketed to £3 billion. But Boehly, who was part of the group who tried to purchase Tottenham Hotspur in 2014, is understood to be weighing up a new offer after having an initial approach turned down. Boehly is not thought to be working to any timescale, which ...
