HUGE CHANGE How Liverpool have gone from Premier League champions-elect to dancing up some stairs and rationing tea bags

Image
A thought may be entering the heads of some Liverpool fans at the moment: ‘We could be Premier League champions now’. Jurgen Klopp’s side have been near-perfect in the Premier League this season, winning 27 of their 29 matches. They’re a massive 25 points clear at the top of the table and only need two more wins to be guaranteed their first league title in 30 years. However, those two wins will feel a million miles away as circumstances regarding the coronavirus outbreak has put the season on hold until April 3 at the very earliest. The obstacles that the world will face because of coronavirus will be very difficult so whether Liverpool become champions or not is not important in the grand scheme of things. Nevertheless, Kopites will have a right to feel some disappointment as Monday could have been the night where three decades of hurt were finally going to end. And what would have made it better is that they could have sealed the title when playing away at

Liverpool's season so far: August

Image
A fruitful August featured a perfect start to the Premier League season and UEFA Super Cup glory for Liverpool. Having begun the month with a penalty shootout defeat by Manchester City in the FA Community Shield, the Reds bounced back immediately to beat Norwich City 4-1 at Anfield on the opening day of the top-flight campaign. An own goal by Grant Hanley and strikes from Mohamed Salah , Divock Origi and Virgil van Dijk - who would be named UEFA Men's Player of the Year later in August - saw Jürgen Klopp's side surge into a four-goal, half-time lead. An eventful first 45 minutes also saw Adrian make his debut for the club just four days after signing, the goalkeeper replacing the injured Alisson Becker for his first of 11 consecutive appearances in the league and Europe. And, five days later, the Spaniard would prove to be Liverpool's hero in Istanbul. Following a 2-2 draw after extra-time, the Reds overcame Chelsea on pe

Big worry for Liverpool, Leeds as sports lawyer makes coronavirus claim

Image
A respected sports lawyer has given table toppers Liverpool and Leeds new reasons to worry the season will be scrapped due to the coronavirus outbreak, declaring it akin to the scenes witnessed in World War II. That’s the view of Richard Cramer, who claims the outbreak means declaring the season ‘void’ must now be seen as “almost inevitable”. The English game, like most of Europe, has suspended all football until April 3 at the earliest due to the outbreak , which has, at the time of writing, killed 35 people so far in the UK. And while there is no outline as to what would happen were the English game be ended now due to the outbreak,  a report in the  Daily Telegraph  claimed senior club executives at the Premier League say there would be no issue declaring Liverpool as champions in a decision that could also see the Premier League extended to 22 teams to accommodate Leeds and West Brom, who currently top the Championship. However, talk the season could

How Jordan Henderson produced a near-perfect replica of an all-time classic Liverpool goal

Image
The second in a new series looking back at the great forgotten Liverpool goals from seasons past. With the 2019/20 season on pause and no current football to talk about for at least the next few weeks, this new series will look back upon some of the greatest forgotten Liverpool goals from years gone by, what made them so special at the time, and their place in the wider context. The second entry focuses on Jordan Henderson's strike in the 2-0 win against Burnley at Anfield in March 2015. The 2014/15 season was one to forget in almost every respect from a Liverpool point of view. Following the heartbreak of missing out on the Premier League title in such agonising fashion in 2013/14, it exposed the extent to which the previous campaign had been built on sand rather than sustainable foundations for long-term success. That was compounded by a catastrophic summer transfer window which culminated in Liverpool essentially filling the Luis Suárez-shaped void with a comb

Kop 10: Who's scored the most goals in first 100 LFC league games?

Image
Mohamed Salah marked his 100th Premier League appearance for Liverpool with a 70th goal in the competition earlier this month. The Egyptian slotted in a clinical equaliser when the Reds came from behind to beat Bournemouth 2-1 at Anfield. No player has ever scored more than Salah in their first century of league games for the club that have been played in the top flight. Roger Hunt did, however, net 72 in his opening 100 league matches – with all of those coming in the Second Division. Here’s a closer look at the 10 most prolific Reds scorers in the same period... 1 – Roger Hunt, 72 goals It’s little surprise, perhaps, that Liverpool’s all-time leading goalscorer in league football comes out on top in this particular race. ‘Sir’ Roger’s first century of league appearances came in the Second Division as the Reds toiled to clinch promotion – a feat they achieved under Bill Shankly in 1961-62. It was that season when Hunt played his 100th leagu

Jürgen Klopp's message to supporters

Image
Jürgen Klopp has today issued the following message to supporters following the Premier League's decision to postpone all football activity until April 3 at the earliest I don’t think this is a moment where the thoughts of a football manager should be important, but I understand for our supporters they will want to hear from the team and I will front that. First and foremost, all of us have to do whatever we can to protect one another. In society I mean. This should be the case all the time in life, but in this moment I think it matters more than ever. I’ve said before that football always seems the most important of the least important things. Today, football and football matches really aren’t important at all. Of course, we don’t want to play in front of an empty stadium and we don’t want games or competitions suspended, but if doing so helps one individual stay healthy - just one - we do it no questions asked. If it’s a choice between football and the good of

Atletico Madrid stun Liverpool in extra-time to send holders crashing out of Champions League

Image
Atletico Madrid pulled off a stunning extra-time comeback to beat Liverpool 3-2 (4-2 agg) and dump the holders out of the Champions League. Three goals in extra-time sent the Spanish club through to the quarter-finals after the Reds dominated for the whole night and briefly went ahead in the tie. Having entered the clash 1-0 down, a dominant Liverpool got the goal they needed through Georginio Wijnaldum and should’ve ended things in normal time. Roberto Firmino finally put the Reds in front early into extra-time, before absolute chaos ensued at Anfield. A howler from Adrian gifted the visitors a priceless away goal through Marcos Llorente, and they were in dreamland when the substitute struck again before on 105 minutes. With Liverpool chasing an unlikely two goals, Alvaro Morata, another substitute, ran up the other end and completed an extraordinary turn of events in the dying moments. Adrián's error a reminder of the Champions League's fine margins, and why champions need a world-class keeper

Image
It was a tale of the two keepers: Jan Oblak excelling; Football is rough, man. It took Heisenberg purity levels of Simeone-ing to flip the script on Wednesday night. And more than a touch of luck. 2-0 up. Anfield bouncing. Liverpool had finally broken through Diego Simeone's impenetrable wall to burst their way into the next round of the Champions League. Or so we thought. An Adrian error and he-should-have-done-better-with-that-shot later and it was 2-2, Atléti adding a third in added time to win the second-leg outright. Liverpool dumped from the competition and on their way to a plodding conclusion to the season -- if there's a season left at all. Gutwrenching. It was a cruel reminder of what makes the Champions League so great and so difficult to win. A nick here, an error there and you're bounced quicker than Michael Owen from a loyalty conference. That Llorente was the guy to essentially end this magical season is utter madness. Llorente had six se
