Roberto Firmino pattern that can spells danger for Liverpool

Andrew Beasley takes a closer look at the statistics that defined Liverpool's defeat to Watford on Saturday and finds one or two worrying trends Liverpool slumped to a defeat which was both stunning and unexpected on Saturday evening, when they  lost 3-0 at Watford  . While the rarity of unbeaten seasons always suggested the Reds might lose a match at some point in their final 11 league games of 2019/20, few would’ve predicted it would occur in either this fixture or by such a wide margin. This was only the seventh Premier League game in which Liverpool have conceded three second half goals without reply, and only the fourth of those where they didn’t also go down to 10 or nine men. Roy Evans’ Reds lost 4-1 at Stamford Bridge in 1998 having been level at the break, Arsenal turned round one of the final matches of Gerard Houllier’s reign to win 4-2 in 2004, and Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool lost 3-2 at Southampton i...

What lesson can Liverpool get from Watford collapse

Image
If you were alive at the time, can I ask what you were up to on the week of 19 October 1996? I'm guessing like me you have absolutely no idea, but what if I told you that Manchester United spent the week by losing two Premier League games 5-0 to Newcastle United and then 6-3 to Southampton. To concede 11 goals in a week would be unheard of at the best of times, but for a team who would go on to be champions once again under the dominance of Alex Ferguson, it was some achievement. To think back to the 90's in general will invoke memories of Ferguson's men sweeping all before them. But it wasn't always a bed of roses at Old Trafford, as every once in a while they would fall to a heavy defeat seemingly out of nowhere. As stated, they won the title in both 1995/96 and 1996/97, but also suffered a 4-1 to Tottenham Hotspur in January 1996, for example. After a 26 game unbeaten run in 1999, they succumbed 5-0 to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on 3 October, while L...

Liverpool verdict - Watford make mockery of opposition jibes but no mitigation for Jurgen Klopp in defeat

Image
Liverpool lose their unbeaten run with a chastening 3-0 defeat to Watford at Vicarage Road Liverpool defeats have been sighted less than Hallie's Comet in recent times, but this chastening setback was nothing less than they deserved. This shrill shriek will be the unwanted wake-up call for those dreaming of  Liverpool  invincibility as a jarring 3-0 loss contrasted with everything that had preceded it in the Premier League since August. On a deeply disappointing night in Hertfordshire, the Reds carelessly frittered away a 44-game unbeaten run that stretched back to January 2019 as they were comprehensively swept aside by Nigel Pearson's Watford . After just one reverse in the 65 Premier League games previous, the Reds saw their L tally double over the course of deeply dispiriting 90 minutes here. Make no mistake, this was as poor as it has been for years under Jurgen Klopp . The Reds manager had no mitigation to point to as h...

Liverpool finally beaten as Ismaila Sarr inspires brilliant Watford

Image
Defeat at Vicarage Road ended the Reds’ unbeaten run of 44 league games, meaning they fell short of matching Arsenal’s Invincibles from the 2003-04 campaign Liverpool manager  Jurgen Klopp  congratulated Watford after they became the first team in the Premier League this season to beat the Reds with a 3-0 win at Vicarage Road. A second-half brace from Ismaila Sarr put the Hornets in control before the Senegal attacker set up Troy Deeney 18 minutes from time to provide the cherry on top of a fine performance from Nigel Pearson’s side. It ended the Reds unbeaten run of 44 league games, meaning they fall short of matching Arsenal’s Invincibles from the 2003-04 campaign, who had gone the season and overall 49 matches without defeat. The first Premier League loss for Liverpool in over a year does little to their hopes of winning the title, but ensured they missed out on including equalling Manchester City’s run of 19 straight top flight wins. ...

Klopp explains why Liverpool weren’t good enough in landmark loss to Watford

Image
Jurgen Klopp admitted that Liverpool would have to take their defeat to Watford on the chin, praising his side for keeping trying even when three goals down. Liverpool’s dreams of completing the Premier League season came crashing down when Watford blew them away in extraordinary fashion at Vicarage Road. Ismaila Sarr got two goals and an assist as Watford claimed a 3-0 win  to become the first team to beat Liverpool in the Premier League in over a year. Klopp told  Sky Sports : “They did exactly what they wanted to do, we did not. That’s how football works. “The first half was a tough one, a lot of second balls, running here and there, we had the ball a lot but we didn’t come in the right positions to cross, the right positions to finish, against a really good, organised side, with a top set-up for this game. “You have to accept it, it’s not so easy, but it’s the proof we were not good enough tonight. It’s always very difficult. We have to accept if aft...

Watford 3-0 Liverpool: Jürgen Klopp's reaction

Image
Jürgen Klopp felt Watford were deserved winners as Liverpool suffered a first Premier League defeat of the season with a 3-0 reversal at Vicarage Road on Saturday night. The Reds saw a 44-match unbeaten run – and an 18-game winning streak – brought to a halt by the Hornets as an Ismaila Sarr brace and a Troy Deeney strike secured victory for the hosts on an evening to forget for the visitors. Klopp acknowledged his side were far from the outstanding levels they’ve set themselves over the past two seasons, but believes the hosts are deserving of plenty of praise for the manner in which they took the game to their opponents. Nevertheless, the manager is certain Liverpool will show the right reaction to their disappointment as they get ready to go again in the league and cup competitions, starting at Chelsea on Tuesday evening. Read on for a transcript of what Klopp had to say in his post-match press conference… On the result and the performances of the te...

Watfor 3 Liverpool o First Loss To Liverpool This Season

Image
Liverpool suffered their first Premier League defeat of the season in a 3-0  loss at Watford on Saturday. Three goals in the space of 18 second-half minutes - Troy Deeney’s strike following an Ismaila Sarr brace - earned the Hornets the points at Vicarage Road. Adam Lallana hit the post with a half-volley from range shortly after coming off the bench in the second half, but the Reds were unable to muster a clear-cut chance of note against Nigel Pearson’s compact, well-drilled outfit. Jürgen Klopp ’s side’s unbeaten Premier League run therefore ends at 44 matches, but they remain 22 points clear at the top of the table. Pos.
